Groundwater exploration falls within the overall science of water resource development. In the intermountain region, groundwater exploration is undertaken to develop water supply for a number of purposes including drinking water supply, irrigation, fire supply, and in at least one case, stream thawing.
Nelson Engineering has been in the groundwater development business since our inception in 1964. The company’s first project was development of groundwater in Jackson, Wyoming for municipal supply. Many times when evaluating municipal supply, groundwater is an economically viable alternative to treating surface water. Our team includes experienced hydrogeologists, well design engineers, and field personnel. We also provide grant writing and other fund raising expertise to communities in need of water but short on funding.
Nelson Engineering has designed and constructed wells for non-traditional uses; both the Jackson Hole Ski Area and Snow King Resort now utilize high volume wells for the purpose of snow-making. Similarly, the Town of Jackson, with the help of Nelson Engineering, has developed high volume wells to thermally dilute Flat Creek, minimizing ice buildup that has historically resulted in ice jams and flood damage.
